Crochet Community Canopy
In May 2025, Khaos Crafts proudly partnered with the LA County Fair to bring the Crochet Community Canopy project to life. Over the course of the month, 268 participants came together — meeting on weekdays and weekends — to stitch, share, and create. Together, they completed 1,329 squares that were sewn into 20 vibrant canopy panels, covering over 1,200 square feet with color, texture, and creativity.
The LA County Fair typically attracts around 750,000 visitors annually.
In recent years, attendance has topped one million people every year, making it one of the largest county fairs in the United States.

The project was more than just a collaborative art piece — it was a true community effort. Friendships were forged over skeins of yarn, beginners learned their very first chain stitch, and experienced crocheters found new inspiration. Many participants set personal crochet goals — from finishing their first square to learning a new stitch — and left with a renewed sense of confidence and joy.

Why projects like this matter:
Community fiber arts projects are powerful because they create a shared purpose. They invite people of all ages and skill levels to slow down, work with their hands, and connect with others. In a world that often feels rushed and disconnected, these projects offer:
- A Space for Creativity and Skill-building — participants gain new skills, from crochet techniques to teamwork and problem-solving.
- Social Connection and Belonging — working side-by-side fosters conversation, laughter, and friendships that extend beyond the project.
- Visible Community Pride — the finished canopy was not just art, but a physical reminder of what can be accomplished when neighbors work together.
- Stress Relief and Mindfulness — crochet is calming and meditative, which supports mental well-being.
The Impact on Pomona and Beyond:
The Crochet Community Canopy brought together a diverse group of participants — families, seniors, teens, girl scouts, and first-time crocheters. The project transformed the LA County Fair space into a colorful, welcoming installation that celebrated community effort. Participants left feeling seen, valued, and proud to have contributed to something bigger than themselves.
This kind of project strengthens the social fabric of a community just as much as it stitches together yarn. It sparks ongoing interest in creativity and encourages participants to keep showing up — for themselves, for their neighbors, and for the arts.
